UK gardeners and gardeners in the UK have been advised to grow basil outside if it’s not permitted, as some cities in the country are introducing new restrictions.
According to the BBC, the new rules have been announced by local authorities, and are expected to be in place by next week.
They are the latest move in an ongoing battle between gardeners, who want to grow plants outdoors to avoid pollution, and those who are worried about the spread of disease.
“In recent years we have had a number of basil plants that have escaped into the UK garden and spread bacteria,” Dr. Caroline Allen, a garden centre specialist in the city of Brighton, told the BBC.
“We’ve had a large number of cases of people with mild cases of salmonella that are now in the community, which is something we’ve been trying to stop.”
Allen said the new measures would help prevent outbreaks in the future.
“If a basil plant is outside you’re only going to catch it from the water and it can’t be treated,” she said.
“So we need to get them outside as much as possible.”
In London, where basil grows in parks and gardens, there have been concerns about the potential for the plants to escape and spread diseases.
In March, the UK government announced that basil would be allowed to grow in parks, gardens and gardens without permits.
A spokesperson for the London Gardeners Association told CNN the move was “not the answer” to the spread, as the plants could easily be infected.
Allen told CNN that if a basil plants is outside, it could infect other people who come into contact with it.
The new rules were also a response to the emergence of the deadly salmonellosis bacteria.
It has also been found that salmonello is spreading among gardeners.
In March, one person died in the US after contracting the disease from growing a garden of basil in a park.
While the new restrictions may not be as strict as the ones in the past, they are a significant change.
“This is a huge relief to gardeners because it is the first step,” said Allen.
“But if you’re going to grow it indoors, you’re also going to have to have some measures to control it.”
